Not sure what to measure your online success? Here are some pointers to get you started

First, questions to ask : How does the quality of visitors different between traffic sources, channels & Campaign?

NEXT consider your website operating model. It is a lead generation site or e-commerce site?

Example of Lead generation site are real estate site, that involve converting Online Leads to Offline Sales. In other words, revenue are being made offline as online leads are closed offline by sales people.

THEN, match the operating models of your site (i.e. how do your site make money) with Key Performance Indicators. Back to the real estate site example, the most important KPIs for lead generation site are conversion rates, cost per lead (CPL), bounce rate and traffic concentration.

Understanding the value of these leads drives the need to better understand site behaviour and identify ways to optimise the conversion.

I believe there are such generic words that works for every audience. Words that invoke a relationship, benefits, assurance, emotional tie and urgency. Here is what I can come up with after visit this page http://www.theleodiamond.com/.

“You” (Create a relationship by including “you” in a conversion),
“Perfect”, “Fashionable”, “Gorgeous selection” (Offer benefits)
“Embodiment of love” (Emotional Tie)
“Trusted retailer”, “master artisans”, “Money-back guarantee”, “The ability to exchange or upgrade”, (Assurance)
“Offer”, “Hurry” (Urgency) – I can’t find any such trigger words for this website – unlikely to find such word for things like Diamond

Such “comforting” words work whatever product or service you are promoting or offering. Consider such trigger words if you are working on your web content. It should matches different personality of your audience.

Without cookies, it would be difficult to create websites that were both easy to use and tailored to the visitor. But many people mistrust cookies and delete them on a regular basis because of “privacy” concerns – they simply don’t want to be tracked in any way. Many spyware identify cookies as “bad” and prompt the user to delete all cookies.

We read online article for free on a page with tracking & ads. Yet online tracking/marketing is view as some sinister evil dark forces.

In the offline world, we are being tracked even such tracking does not require our permission. From the staff who click on a tally counter when you step into a supermarket to other shoppers who saw you paying your groceries with a credit card.

In the mind of web user, there must exist distinction between anonymous collected data from collected personal information. Organisation in their privacy policies need to make a distiniction between anonymous collected data from collected personal information
E.g.

Anonymous collected data (cookies set by web analytics tool)

Collected personal information (information you submit via online form)

There are 2 privacy issues that web users and website owners should be aware of . Non–Personally Identifiable Information (non-PII) This is anonymous aggregate data that cannot be used to identify or deduce demographic information. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Examples of collecting personal data—both asked-for data such as their name, age, and address, as well as non-volunteered information that can be discovered, such as gender.

PII According to EU directive 95/46/EC

Article 2a: ‘personal data’ shall mean any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (‘data subject’); an identifiable person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identification number or to one or more factors specific to his physical, physiological, mental, economic, cultural or social identity;

Netherlands who opted for stricter privacy regime, saying that cookies are personal information.

First-Party Cookies don’t contain any Personally Identifiable Information – data. They just have a random string of numbers or alphabets that only the company who set the cookie can read. “For example here is a cookie that Webtrends.com just set on my browser as I visited www.webtrends.com: C8ctADY1LjU3LjI0NS4xMS00MTU3MTQwMTc2LjI5OTQ0NzE5AAAAAAAAAAACAAAAo
M0AAINghUgWYIVI.” (http://www.kaushik.net/avinash/web-analytics-visitor-tracking-cookies/)

Third-Party Cookies There is higher blocking rates of third-party cookies by users, firewalls, and antispyware software. For example, the latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer block third-party cookies by default if a site doesn’t have a compact privacy policy (see http://www.w3.org/P3P).

“Are you willing to give up your “privacy” in order to have easier-to-use websites?”

Yes I do not mind. I know or aware what happening when I checkout a webpage. Think about this: it akin to a shopkeeper who see me and remember me as far as his memory can serve: “A middle age shoppper with 4 kids who wear jeans visit my shop every saturday and buy a cartion of full cream milk and a carton of low fat milk.”

In a day, the shopper might encounter such anonymous individuals of different demographics going into his shop. The shopper might based on what he encounter improve his offering and shop layout to serve similar customers without the need to know where they lived and bank account number.

“Are you willing to give up your “privacy” so that the ads you see on websites are likely to be more relevant to you?”

Yes. I am willing to “give up my privacy”. I know that such sites who provide me useful information which I take upon myself to find and access need to be paid for one way or another. One way of financing for the website owner is thru serving ads. I click on the relevant ads even thought I do not intend to buy at the moment. I see this clicking of ad as a form of tipping to the publisher. (See also http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2008/08/ads-are-the-new.html)

Is privacy important?

YES but as industry people we need to create in the mind of visitors the different between anonymous collected data ( cookies set by web analytics tool) and collected personal information (information you submit via online form). I think education from the industry will helps to allay Fear, uncertainty and doubt for most people who are concern about their privacy.

I believe we can achieve the right balance between protecting the individual’s right to privacy and the right of businesses to collect and use data to serve the customer better.

The annotation tools in Kindle Reader works for me. I can highlight it and type in some note for later review

The annoted noted will appear across all 3 Kindle reader: Kindle Cloud Reader, Kindle for PC, Kindle on iOS device (iPad and iPhone).

The next logical question is : Can I use Kindle Reader to read my own document?

With that in mind, I set myself up to export some lecture notes from Moodle to PDF and “port” to Kindle Reader

After trial and error, I can said it a success and discover the following.

The so-called Kindle Personal Document Service can convert and deliver the following types of documents:

Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)

Rich Text Format (.rtf)

HTML (.htm, .html)

Text (.txt) documents

Archived documents (zip , x-zip) and compressed archived documents

Mobi book

Images that are of type

JPEGs (.jpg)

GIFs (.gif)

Bitmaps (.bmp) and

PNG images (.png)

are delivered without conversion to Kindle DX, Second Generation and Latest Generation Kindles.

Conversion of Adobe PDF (.pdf) to Kindle format is done on experimental basis.

If the document(s) that failed belonged to one of the above document types, please ensure the document is not password protected or encrypted. Only the Latest Generation Kindles support password protected PDFs.

Here the official guide from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000719931

If you ever need to move your WordPress installation from one server to another, here are the steps

Step 1:
Download the WordPress files from your server. Make sure you have a complete copy of your wp-config.php and .htaccess files and your wp-content directory.

Step 2:
Export your database. If you have installed any plugins that create new tables, be sure to include them in your backup. They will share the prefix (e.g. ‘wp_’) you specified during the installation. You can install Austin Matzko’s WP-DB-Backup plugin or use your host’s control panel (e.g. PHPMyAdmin) to export your WordPress database.

Step 3:
Edit your wp-config.php file. Change the database connection settings to correspond with the values on your new server. You should also define your site and blog URLs in the configuration file, as shown in Listing 2-4. This will override the settings in your database so you can log in on your new server. (Otherwise, WordPress would constantly redirect you to your old site!)

define('WP_SITEURL', 'http://example.com);
define('WP_HOME', 'http://example.com');

Step 4:
Upload your files, including the modified wp-config.php, to your new web server.

Step 5:
Import the database backup you made in Step 2 to your database on your new server using your new web host’s control panel tools.

Step 6:
If you changed your website address, your posts and pages probably contain many hardcoded paths to your uploaded media files. Use the Search and Replace plugin (shown below) to change these to your new website address.

If you find this helpful, but don’t actually want to implement yourself, I’m be happy to help for an affordable fees.
